Tony’s Body Shop marketing effort pays off

Tony and Isabelle Flores open Tony’s Body Shop in Oxnard, Calif., in 1965. Considered hardworking businessmen by friends and family, the couple taught their children good work ethics from an early age.

Their son, Jay, found they were having financial difficulties and started working in the little mom-and-pop store after graduating from college. He now operates the family business with his wife, Evelyne, their children, Jayson, Jaycob and Jasmine, Jay’s older sister, Married, and his cousin, Adrien.

The family-owned business is located approximately two miles from where it opened over 50 years ago, and Flores pride themselves on providing quality repair to customers following OEM procedures.

Body News spoke to Jay about the challenges small businesses face and the success of Tony’s Body Shop through its marketing efforts.

What challenges are small businesses currently facing?

One of the biggest issues I see in the industry is that business owners really don’t understand finances and don’t know if the boat is sinking or is floating. They don’t understand their true operating costs, so they can give the farm away without even knowing it.

About twenty years ago, I joined the AkzoNobel Acoat Program selected to learn more about finances. I was educated on income statements, balance sheets and writing a business plan and a marketing plan. The program really helped me and I’m still a part of it today. It allows me to meet other store owners and talk about what’s going on in the industry so I know what I need to do to stay up to date.
