BERLIN – Tesla invites people living near its new German factory to visit the production complex next month.

The plant, which will supply Tesla cars to the European market, is nearing completion in Gruenheide in the German state of Brandenburg.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter that he would be attending what he called a “county fair” on October 9.

Citizens of Brandenburg and Berlin will be allowed to explore the factory site and look inside.

Visitors can “visit stalls on site and take part in various activities,” and will also have the option of taking rides in a Model Y, Tesla said. Food trucks will also be present on the site.

Those interested in attending the event from 10:00 a.m. local time to 7:00 p.m. can pre-register online until September 30, Tesla said.

“Due to capacity constraints, the tickets are not guaranteed,” the company wrote. If the event is at full capacity, the automaker will favor visitors with an address in Berlin or Brandenburg.

Tesla plans to send tickets by October. Since footfall is expected to be high, the company has asked visitors to use public transportation to get to the plant. Shuttles will be arranged to move visitors to the event and Tesla says it will take place regardless of weather conditions.

To attend, visitors must follow one of the German 3G rules (vaccinated, recovered, tested). Proof must be presented at the entrance and wearing a mask is recommended.

Environmental resistance and red tape delayed the plant by 5.8 billion euros ($ 6.9 billion).

In August, Musk visited Germany and met with heads of state. The final environmental approval by the state of Brandenburg for the car plant and a battery plant which is also planned on the site, is pending.

An online consultation for objections to the updated application for the construction project is scheduled to begin next week. Tesla has been cleared to begin construction on the plant after obtaining preliminary approvals and construction is well underway.

Environmentalists have warned of the negative consequences of the plant, such as shortages of drinking water.

Musk said the company hopes to build the first cars at the plant in October or soon after.
