Parker is also a mother and sees the chance to create change for her two daughters and other women in the professional world.
“I think Petersen is visionary in what he does and aims to achieve parity in the automotive industry,†says Parker. “There are a lot of women who are creative, innovative, smart and disjointed and have everything they need to make huge contributions except financial support. Only two percent of all venture capital goes to women-owned businesses, so there is a gap. It was increasing slightly, and in 2020 it plummeted and started going in the wrong direction, in part because women took the brunt of the challenges at home. “
The committee is accepting applications until July 31 and includes not only financial support and mentoring, but an office inside the Petersen and access to all the contacts and resources that the Petersen has to offer. Applicants may own a business that affects automobiles in many ways, such as aftermarket vehicle accessories, driving related clothing, transportation, and delivery. Potential mentees are due to be a Southern California-based company by 2021, though Lassek says they hope to expand the program nationwide.
“Having access to those who have led the way and who are further afield is truly remarkably valuable,†Parker said. “He’s a game changer.”
