MARSHALL – Members of the Marshall School Board heard more details on Monday about plans for a new vocational and technical education center (CTE). Marshall Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Williams said the district will close the purchase of land for the center this week.
“CNA, automobile and welding will be the first classes we organize”, Williams said. The district hopes to have students in the new location next fall, he said.
MPS purchases property located on North US Highway 59 in Marshall. The property would provide the school district with space for hands-on vocational training and allow it to add other types of training in addition to MATEC’s current Welding and Certified Practical Nurses (CNA) programs.
There are currently four existing buildings on the property, but not all of them would be usable right away, Williams said. One building suffered water damage at its southern end, Williams said. MPS plans to remove part of the structure and rebuild it in the classroom. The north side of that same building will house spaces for auto workshops and welding, Williams said.
Another existing building on the property will likely need to be demolished because it does not meet building code requirements for a school, Williams said. The other two buildings on the property will function well for the storage of welding and auto shop equipment, as well as for additional cold storage.
Later, the cold store could become a space for a construction trades lab, he said.
School board members plan to take a closer look at the CTE site later this month. The board of directors voted to start their Nov. 15 meeting earlier to allow for a visit before doing business. The meeting was moved to 4:30 p.m.
