Hertz to supply up to 50,000 Tesla to Uber’s rental program – Rental operations
Hertz and Uber today announced a partnership to provide up to 50,000 Teslas by 2023 to Uber drivers for hire when using the Uber network.
Starting November 1, drivers can lease Tesla from Hertz through this program in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Washington, DC. Nationwide expansion is slated for the coming weeks. If successful, the program could expand to 150,000 Tesla over the next three years.
In a press announcement, Hertz says the partnership is the largest expansion of electric vehicles on a mobility platform in North America and one of the largest in the world.
The announcement follows Monday’s announcement of Hertz’s partnership with Tesla to add 100,000 Tesla Model 3s to Hertz’s rental fleet by 2022.
âToday’s partnership with Uber is another major step forward for Hertz becoming a critical part of the modern mobility ecosystem and executing our commitment to be a forward-thinking company,â said Mark Fields, interim CEO of Hertz, in a statement. “We are creating the new Hertz and charting a dynamic new course for the future of travel, mobility and the automotive industry.”
âClimate change is an urgent global challenge that we must all tackle together, and now is the time to drive a green recovery from the pandemic,â said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. “It combines the power of Tesla, Hertz and Uber to help accelerate the transition to zero emission mobility. We look forward to seeing more electric vehicles on the road right away.”
Participating drivers receive a preferential weekly rate for Hertz rentals, which includes insurance, basic maintenance and unlimited miles.
Uber also offers its drivers incentives to rent electric vehicles in the form of discounts to be recharged through the EVgo network (EVgo supports Tesla recharging) and Uber’s Green Future program, which offers an additional $ 1 per trip and up to $ 4,000 per year.
The partnership is nothing new: Hertz has been leasing vehicles to Uber drivers since 2016, although the vehicles to date have come from Hertz’s daily rental program.
