Electric vans aren’t even on the road yet and the segment is already starting to get crowded. With the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, GMC Hummer EV, and Tesla Cybertruck soon to hit the market, along with other options from Lordstown, Bollinger, and Ram, things in the world of electric pickup trucks are heating up. In an attempt to stay ahead of the pack, GMC has confirmed it is working on a second electric pickup truck, although the automaker is not ready to confirm what the pickup will be.

Of course, the GMC Hummer EV is a radical pickup truck with its sky-high six-figure price tag, 1,000 horsepower figure, and a 3-second 0-100 km / h time. With these specifications, the truck is the brand’s way of showing itself. While it works like a halo vehicle to showcase cutting edge technology, it’s not a good thing if you’re looking to get more consumers to switch to EVs. The GMC Hummer EV will also be hard to find, as only half of GMC dealers will sell the EV. Perhaps that opens the door for a second more affordable electric truck from GMC.

According to Automotive News, a second electric pickup truck is in the works of GMC. Duncan Aldred, global vice president of Buick and GMC, told the store that a full-size electric pickup would arrive “on time.” Aldred, however, declined to confirm whether the truck would be part of the Sierra lineup. This leaves the door open to a wide range of possibilities.

With Chevrolet announcing earlier in April that it was working on an electric version of the Silverado, it was only a matter of time until GMC made a similar announcement. GM president Mark Reuss said the electric Silverado will have a range of around 400 miles and will be available to retail and commercial customers. We expect GMC’s second pickup to share much of the same specs as the upcoming electric Silverado.

At the time of this writing, we don’t know much about Chevrolet or GMC electric trucks. Automotive News estimates that the GMC truck will be built alongside the GMC Hummer EV at Factory Zero and will use GM’s Ultium batteries. Other than that, things like range, horsepower, builds, name, and when it went on sale are unclear.

General Motors aims to sell 30 new electric vehicles globally by 2025. The ambitious target is part of the automaker’s plan to become carbon neutral and become a fully electric brand in the future. While GM claims all of its brands will play an important role in its drive to be fully electric, the automaker has not specified what lies ahead for GMC. Beyond the Hummer EV truck and the Hummer EV SUV, the automaker hasn’t provided much information on what’s to come.
