BESSEMER, Pa .– Elmer “Butch” Jay, 85, died on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 in Pittsburgh.
Butch was born on March 18, 1936 in New Castle, Pennsylvania, to Earl S. and Effie Clingerman Jay.
He was married for 53 years to Nancy Kiminkinen Jay, who predeceased him in death on May 7, 2010.
After graduating from Wampum High School in 1954, Butch continued to serve in the United States Army until his marriage to Nancy in 1956.
He was employed by Ohio Edison as a lineman until his retirement in 1996 with 40 years of service. A loyal member of Local 118 Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA), which for many years served as a “grievance man†for the union, he continued to support union programs until his retirement.
During a distinguished career that spanned more than 30 years, Butch was widely recognized as one of the region’s top fast pitchers before hanging up his spikes in 1988 at the age of 52. Upon his retirement in 1996, he opened “BK’s Shine Shackâ€, a car detailing shop in New Middletown.
In retirement, Butch focused on being “Pop” and “Big Pop,” an avid babysitter and the biggest supporter of sports and extracurricular activities for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. children.
He was a member of the Bessemer United Presbyterian Church, as well as the Bessemer Croation and Johnson clubs. He was very fond of socializing, attending auto shows, car races and sporting events in high school, as well as watching boxing with his son.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia (Paul) Barth of Poland, Amy (Scott) Johnson of Moon Township, Pa., And a son, Daniel “Danny” Jay of Pittsburgh; one brother, Gary “Pudge” Jay; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by both parents; five sisters, Vada Yagersky, Carrie Shea, Edith Preisel, Ethel Dennis and Helen Swogger; and three brothers, Guy, Arthur and Elbert Jay.
Family and friends will gather from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at the Terry A. Cunningham Funeral Home in Bessemer, Pa., Followed by a Celebration of Life service.
