5 charged with attempted murder after shooting Spartanburg County deputies, officials say

Five people are facing murder charges after shooting Spartanburg County deputies during a chase Thursday morning, according to Lt. Kevin Bobo of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office. At around 2 a.m., a deputy got behind an SUV on Hayne and Springs streets that was stolen from the Marriott parking lot on N. Church Street on Aug. 30, Bobo said. According to Bobo, the SUV had several suspects, so the deputy waited for reinforcements to arrive before attempting a traffic stop. The five suspects also confessed to a burglary at the Smart Cash Pawn Shop in Whitney on September 6, an attempted burglary at the Camp Croft Trading Company and burglaries at Apple Auto Rental on Venture Drive and the Underground on Southport Road earlier Wednesday evening before the prosecution, Bobo said. Both Petty and Williams have additional charges of possession of a stolen firearm because they were the ones who shot our deputies, Bobo said.

Williams was also charged with malicious damage because he vandalized one of our interrogation rooms once he was transported to the office, Bobo said.

The 16-year-old was transported to the Columbia Department of Juvenile Justice, Bobo said.

The four adult suspects will have formal hearings before an investigating judge on Friday morning at 11 a.m.
